Hello, wonderful friends! 🌟 Growing up is a big, beautiful adventure. But for our amazing young people aging out of the foster care system, that adventure can feel a little bit like standing at the edge of a very big ocean. 🌊

At Lena’s Adventures, we believe that every single youth deserves to be seen, celebrated, and loved, especially during the "Big Leap" into adulthood. If you are a young adult preparing to exit care, a foster parent, or a supportive advocate, this guide is for you.

We’ve seen over 200 kids shine, and we know that with the right tools, you won't just survive, you will thrive. Let’s dive into the resources that will help you sparkle as you start your next chapter! ✨

🌈 The Most Important Step: Do This First

Before you pack a single box or sign a single paper, there is one thing you must do.

Build your Dream Team. 🤝

Aging out doesn't mean you have to be "all on your own." In fact, nobody, not even the most successful adults, does life completely alone! Your "Dream Team" is a group of adults you trust who can give you advice, a listening ear, or a helping hand when things get tricky.

  • Identify 3 "Anchor" People: Think of a former foster parent, a teacher, a mentor, or a case worker. Ask them, "Can I call you if I have a question about life?"

  • Speak Up Early: Start talking to your social worker at least 6 to 12 months before your 18th birthday. Tell them your dreams. Tell them your fears. They are there to help you build your bridge to the future.

You are worthy of a support system that cheers for you! 📣

📦 Essential Supplies: The Next Step Trunks

Moving into your first apartment or dorm is a huge milestone. But let’s be honest: buying towels, toasters, and twin sheets adds up fast! 💸

That is why one of our favorite programs at Lena’s Adventures is the Next Step Trunks. We distribute these magical chests quarterly (in September, December, March, and June) to ensure that youth aging out have the essentials they need to feel at home right away.

What’s inside a Next Step Trunk?

  • Kitchen must-haves like kettles and cookware. 🍳

  • Cozy comfort items like fluffy blankets and pillows. ☁️

  • Practical tools like first-aid kits and cleaning supplies. 🧼

  • A copy of one of our inspirational books to remind you that your story matters! 📖

If you are a youth in the Richmond area or an agency looking to partner with us, check out our Programs Page to learn more about our upcoming distributions. We want your first home to be a place of joy!

🏛️ Staying Connected: Fostering Futures in Virginia

In Virginia, you don't have to say goodbye to all support the second you turn 18. Through a wonderful program called Fostering Futures, young adults aged 18 to 21 can receive extended foster care services. 🛣️

This program provides a safety net while you work on your goals. You can get help with:

  • Monthly financial support for living expenses.

  • Case management to help you navigate adulting.

  • Housing assistance.

Action Step: Ask your worker specifically about "Fostering Futures" and what you need to do to stay enrolled. Usually, this involves being in school, working, or participating in a program that helps you get a job. You can find more details on the Virginia Department of Social Services website.

🎓 Education and Career: Chasing Your Dreams

Your potential is limitless! 🚀 Whether you want to go to a four-year university, a community college, or a trade school to become an amazing electrician or chef, there is money waiting to help you.

1. The FAFSA "Superpower" 🦸

When you fill out the Free Application for Federal Student Aid (FAFSA), make sure to check the box saying you were in foster care. This gives you "Independent Student" status. This means the government looks at your income, not your parents', which often unlocks the maximum amount of grants (free money!) to pay for school.

2. Chafee Education and Training Vouchers (ETV) 🎟️

The federal Chafee program offers vouchers specifically for former foster youth. You can receive up to $5,000 per year for college or vocational training. This can cover tuition, books, and even your rent!

3. Workforce Support

Not sure about college? No problem! Check out WIOA Youth programs at your local workforce center. They offer free job training, internships, and help with your resume.

🏠 Finding Your "Home Sweet Home"

Finding a safe place to live is the foundation of your success. In addition to Fostering Futures, there are specialized organizations in Virginia dedicated to housing for aged-out youth.

  • My Path Forward: This incredible program by the Children’s Home Society of Virginia provides housing and "wrap-around" services. They don't just give you a key; they give you a community. Learn more at CHSVA.org.

  • The Up Center: If you are in the Hampton Roads area, The Up Center offers mentorship and housing support to help you bridge the gap.

  • HUD Vouchers: Ask your worker about FYI (Foster Youth to Independence) vouchers. These are special housing vouchers designed just for you!

🩺 Your Health Matters: Medicaid to 26

We want you to stay healthy and strong so you can keep being adventurous! 💪 Did you know that most youth who were in foster care on their 18th birthday qualify for Medicaid until age 26?

This covers:

  • Doctor visits and check-ups.

  • Dental care.

  • Mental health support and counseling (which is so important for processing your journey!).

  • Prescriptions.

Don't let your coverage drop! Make sure your address is updated with the Department of Social Services so you get your new insurance card every year. 📭
