Black Children in Foster Care: The Conversation We Need to Have : and How Stories Change Everything

There is a conversation happening in child welfare circles that needs to reach far beyond those rooms. It is a conversation about equity. It is about representation. It is about the disproportionate number of Black children in the U.S. foster care system. 🌟

Most importantly, it is about what we: as communities, advocates, and storytellers: can do to make sure every child feels seen, celebrated, and loved. 💖

At Lena’s Adventures, this conversation isn’t abstract. It is our heartbeat. Our founder, Regina Alston, is a Black woman who grew up in the foster care system. When she created Lena: the bright, adventurous girl at the center of our books: she did it with a clear mission.

Lena is a Black girl finding her way to her forever home. This choice was intentional. It was radical. And it was deeply necessary. 🌈

The Data We Cannot Ignore 📊

To change the future, we have to look honestly at the present. The numbers tell a story that we must listen to with our whole hearts.

Black children make up roughly 14% of the U.S. child population. However, they account for 23% of children in the foster care system. 📉

This isn't a coincidence. It is the result of deep-seated systemic inequities. These children are more likely to:

• Experience multiple placements (moving from home to home).

• Spend longer amounts of time in the system.

• Age out without a permanent family connection compared to their peers.

We know that poverty, implicit bias, and lack of resources often disrupt Black families disproportionately. But we also know that awareness is the first step toward advocacy. When we understand the "why," we can better provide the "how" for support. 🤝
