A Trunk is a Starting Point: The Message Behind the Next Step Trunk Program

For most of us, an 18th birthday is a massive milestone. It’s a day for cake, big dreams, and a little bit of nervous excitement about the future. Maybe you’re thinking about college. Maybe you’re eyeing your first apartment or a summer road trip. It feels like the whole world is opening its arms to you. 🎂✨

But for thousands of young people in the foster care system, turning 18 feels very different. Instead of a celebration, it often feels like a countdown. In the world of foster care, 18 is the age where the system says, "You’re an adult now. You’re on your own."

At Lena’s Adventures, we don’t believe anyone should ever have to walk into adulthood alone. We believe every young person deserves to be celebrated, supported, and cheered on as they take their next big step. That is exactly why we created the Next Step Trunk Program. 🧳❤️

The Reality of Aging Out

Every year in the United States, between 15,000 and 20,000 youth "age out" of the foster care system. This means they leave the system without a permanent family connection. No safety net. No childhood home to return to during college breaks. No "Mom" or "Dad" to call when a tire goes flat or a rent check is due.

The statistics are heavy, but we share them because they remind us why our mission is so urgent:

• Housing: About 20% of youth become homeless the very day they age out. 🏠

• Education: Only about half of youth who age out will obtain a high school diploma or GED, and less than 3% will earn a bachelor’s degree. 🎓

• Employment: By their mid-20s, only around 50% are consistently employed. 💼

These aren't just numbers. These are adventurous, bright, and capable young adults who are being asked to do the impossible: survive and thrive with almost no resources.

But here is the good news, we can change the story. Research shows that when youth have community support during this transition, their chances of success skyrocket. They aren't just statistics; they are the heroes of their own stories. They just need a little help packing for the journey. 🌟

What is a Next Step Trunk?

A Next Step Trunk is more than just a box of stuff. It is a quarterly distribution of high-quality, essential supplies designed to turn a bare apartment into a home. Each trunk is curated with love and intention to meet the immediate needs of a young adult moving into independent living.

When we pack these trunks in Richmond, Virginia, we think about the small things that make a big difference. We think about the comfort of a soft towel after a long day. We think about the pride of cooking a first meal in a brand-new pan.

Every Next Step Trunk includes:

• Bedding and Towels: High-quality sheets, pillows, and fluffy towels because everyone deserves a good night’s rest and a sense of dignity. 🛏️

• Kitchen Essentials: Pots, pans, plates, and utensils. We also include non-perishable food to ensure their pantry isn't empty on day one. 🍳

• Personal Care Items: Hygiene products that allow them to focus on their goals rather than worrying about the basics. 🧼

• Resource Guides: Hand-picked information on local housing, employment opportunities, and educational support. Knowledge is power! 📚

• A Handwritten Note: This is the most important part. Every trunk contains a personal letter of encouragement from someone in our community.

At Lena’s Adventures, we often talk about our main character, Lena. She’s bright, adventurous, and she represents every foster and adopted child who deserves to be seen and celebrated.
